1、在英国英语和北美英语中，college均指中学后的教育机构。在英国，college提供高等或专职教育。在美国，college开设初级学位课程。university除开设初级学位课程外还有更高学位的课程。
2、在北美英语中，college常指大学（university），尤其涉及学士学位。指上大学不用定冠词the：
My daughter is at university.
我女儿在上大学。
3、北美英语不用at university或at college表示上大学，而在university或college之前加a或the表示上某所大学：
I didn’t want to go to a large university.
我当时不想去大的综合性大学读书。
